Oregon Pioneer Matthew Smtih of Franklin dies October 20, 1895

“DIED, — Matthew Smith of Franklin, Lane County, died at his home of old age at 4 o’clock Sunday evening, October 20, 1895, aged 76 years. Deceased was a pioneer of Lane County, having come here from Iowa in 1852 and settled on a donation land claim where the village of Franklin now stands. The Smith donation soon become the center of population in that community and took the name of Smithfield. Later, however, when the postoffice was established at that place it was called Franklin, and the village has since gone by that name. Deceased leaves two daughters and a son to mourn his death, besides numerous other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Inman cemetery.” Junction City Times (Oregon), Oct. 26, 1895, pg.5, col. 2.
