Mrs. Lydia Watkins – Lane County Oregon native – Dies Feb. 23, 1881

The funeral services of Mrs. Lydia Watkins were held at the house of the late James Watkins, in this city.  Thursday, the 24th inst.  She died at Roseburg on the 23d inst., and her remains were brought to this place for interment in the family lots in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Mrs. Lydia (Cummings) Watkins was born in Lane County, Oregon, Jan 27th, 1854.  She confessed the Lord and became a Christian at Grand Prairie in the summer of 1869; was married to Mr. J.C. Watkins of Roseburg, Dec. 4, 1870; and after a protracted illness and suffering for three long years, without a mummer, she fell asleep in Him whom she had faithfully trusted, Feb. 23rd, 1881.  She died as she had lived, a faithful affectionate, Christian wife, whose special life work was to make others happy.  Roseburg and Harrisburg papers please copy.” Oregon State Journal (Eugene), Feb. 26, 1881, pg. 5 col. 3.  University of Oregon, Knight Library, Newspaper Collection.

“DEATH OF MRS. LYDIA WATKINS.

Mrs. Lydia Watkins, wife of Mr. J.C. Watkins, died at her home in Roseburg last Wednesday morning after a lingering illness of three years.  Her remains were brought to this place on Thursday morning and laid to rest in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at three o’clock in the afternoon, the funeral taking place at the residence of the late James Watkins.  Mrs. Watkins was well-known and highly esteemed by the people of this place, having resided here several years with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cummins, and leaves a large number of relatives and friends to mourn her early departure.  Her husband, who attended the funeral of his father at this place only two weeks ago.  has the sympathy of the entire community in his great bereavement.”  Oregon State Journal (Eugene, OR) Feb. 26, 1898, pg. 5, col. 3.  University of Oregon Knight Libary, Newspaper Collection.

The Eugene Pioneer Cemetery (aka Odd Fellows Cemetery) lists the following Watkins.  Mrs. Lydia Watkins, born Oregon and died Feb. 23, 1881.  John Cyrus Watkins born Dec. 5, 1847 and died Feb. 12, 1919 in Eugene Oregon.  James F. Watkins, born in Virginia and died Feb. 11, 1881.  Mrs. Sarah H. Watkins, born Oct. 7, 1863 and died Aug. 16, 1927 in Eugene, Oregon.
