John D. Hampton, Oregon Pioneer dies March 1898

“John D. Hampton Dead.

John D. Hampton, the well-known and much respected pioneer of this city, died Friday evening last at his home on Pearl street, after an extended illness.  He was aged 67, 5 months and 18 days.

Hampton was born in Lafayette county, Missouri, September 18, 1831.  He came to Lane county in an early day and secured a large tract of land near Goshen.  He has been for years one of the largest cattle dealers in this section of the country, marketing the same at San Francisco and other centers.  He has been a good and much respected citizen and his death is a community’s loss.

He leaves a devoted wife and seven children, who with entire sympathy of their many friends join in the bereavement caused by the loss of husband and father.”  Oregon State Journal (Eugene, OR), Mar. 11, 1899, pg. 5, col. 5.  University of Oregon’s Knight Library.

John D Hampton is buried at the Eugene Masonic Cemetery, many Hamptons are buried there.
