“DEATH OF JUDGE FITCH.
C.W. Fitch, County Judge of Lane County, died at his residence in Eugene City, last Sunday, Jan 21st, at 2 o’clock, p.m. of consumption. He was born in Luzerne county, Penn., Dec. 1, 1843, moved to California in 1863, and came to Oregon about two years later. He was principal of the public school at Roseburg and while teaching read law with Ex-Gov. S.F. Chadwick. He was admitted in 1867, and shortly after married to Miss Nannie Linn of Jacksonville. In 1870 he commenced practice in Eugene City, as a lawyer. He was associated at different times with J.B. Underwood, J.M Thmpson and Robt Fagan, now all deceased. He was elected prosecuting attorney of this district in 1872 and reelected to the same office in 1874. He was elected judge of Lane county in 1880. He leaves a wife and two daughters, aged respectively twelve and nine years. He possessed a high order of natural ability and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. The funeral took place Tuesday from the residence of deceased, under the auspices of the Masons. He was a member of the Masonic order, the Odd Fellows, the Workingmen and an exempt Fireman. An appropriate discourse was delivery by Rev. E.R. Geary. The remains were escorted by the Eugene City Band and a procession of Masons, Old Fellows and Firemen, and were interred in the Odd Fellows cemetery.” Oregon State Journal (Eugene), 27 Jan 1883, pg. 5, col. 3. The Eugene Pioneer Cemetery (I.O.O.F.) lists the following burials in block 216, plots 3 &4. Mrs. Sarah D. Fitch, born 2/5/1817, Luzerne Co., Penn. died 12/23/1897 in Eugene. Charles W. Fitch, born 12/2/1843, Wyoming Co., Penn. died 1/21/1882, Eugene. I am not sure the connection between Sarah and Charles, but assuming it could be a mother & son.
The 1880 census for Eugene, lists C.W. Fitch (lawyer) 38yr born Penn. Wife, Nancy 39yr born Ohio, children: Maude Fitch 9yr, born Oregon and Blanche Fitch 7yr also born Oregon.
Note the discrepancy with Charles’ death date from the cemetery records and the issue date of the obituary – cemetery records show death year as 1/21/1882 and newspaper obit appears on Jan 27, 1883. Cemetery records give his date of birth as 12/2/1843 and obituary gives 12/1/1843. Also in conflict is the county of birth – cemetery records show Wyoming Co., and obituary lists Luzerne Co., Penn. In Pennsylvania, Luzerne & Wyoming counties are next to one another.
His grave stone also give the year of death as 1892. This is one time when the date cut in stone I think is in error!
