Yesterday afternoon, in Eugene, there passed from this life one of Lane county’s most highly respected pioneers and honored citizens in the person of John Kelly, who died at his home on west Sixth street, aged 85 years, 1 month and 12 days.  His death will be a shock and surprise to his wide circle of friends, not only in Lane county, but throughout the state. He had been in poor health for some time but was able to get about, having gone down town Monday, where he called at the Register office usual in his rounds.  Tuesday he was taken ill and all efforts to revive him proved fruitless, and the end came at 4:30 p.m. caused by heart failure.

Deceased was born in Dublin Ireland, May 8, 1816, and at the age of 9 years came with his parents to Montreal, Canada, where he resided for a number of years.  He first came west to Oregon in 1847 and again in 1849, locating at Oregon City, where he served as government quartermaster.  Later he moved with his family to Roseburg, where he served as register of the land office from 1858 to 1866, at which time he moved to Lane county and settled at Springfield, residing there until last year when he sold his splendid Springfield property and moved to Eugene.  From 1874 to 1880 he was collector of customs at Portland, and in 1890 had general supervision of the census of Oregon.  He was a member of the Spencer Butte Lodge No. 9, I.O.O.F.

Deceased leaves a wife and eight children, as follows:  Mrs. A.B. Tanner, Portland; Mrs. H.B. Miller and Mrs. Therese M. Jackson, Eugene; Bessie, and Kate, John F. and George H Kelly of the Booth-Kelly Co. and Abraham Kelly.

Arrangements for the funeral, which will probably be held Monday, will not be completed until the arrival of George H. Kelly from Wendling.

The Register sends sincerest sympathy to the family of one who, while life’s shadows gathered about his declining days, still loved and was true to his family and friends.”  Eugene Morning Register, June 16, 1901, pg. 6, col. 3, University of Oregon, Knight Library Newspaper Collection.

The Eugene Pioneer Cemetery (aka I.O.O.F) list the Hon. John Kelly born May 3, 1818 in Dublin Co., Ireland died June 15, 1901.  Elizabeth Parker Kelly born September 15, 1834, Indiana* died October 31, 1908.  Abraham L.
