At his home about two miles down the river road from this city yesterday morning, Al Strong, aged 61 years and 22 days of quick consumption. The gentleman was well known in this city, having removed here with his family some 8 years ago.
He was born in Kentucky and when a boy removed from his native state to Missouri from where he came to California in 1852. At Healdsburg, Sonoma county, California, he was married to Miss Jennie Bromfield in January 1868. They made their home in California till they came to Oregon.
Deceased leaves a wife and three sons, Frank, Ned and Alfred, who have the sympathy of many friends.
The services were held at he family residence at 10 o’clock this forenoon, Rev. Alley officiating. The remains will be laid in the I.O.O.F cemetery. The Morning Register (Eugene, OR), June 5, 1896, pg. 4, col. 1-2, University of Oregon Knight Library, Newspaper Collection.
This small obituary caught my eye because it mentioned that Mr. Strong married Miss Jennie Bromfield in January 1868 at Healdsburg, Sonoma Co., California. It is always a huge plus when a wife’s maiden name is given and the marriage place! Obituaries are a good starting point to help us find primary sources of information.
The 1900 Federal Census lists “Jane” Strong living in Cottage Grove with her married son Alfred and his wife Blanche W. Strong. Mr. Strong is listed in the I.O.O.F. “Pioneer Cemetery” inventory, but no other Strongs are listed. Cemetery records list him as “A.L. Strong and not “Al Strong” The obituary does list a son as “Alfred” Strong – so he could very well be named after his father. Further investigation is needed.
