“Died — At her home in this city, on the morning of January 12, 1896, Mrs. Mary Christian, beloved wife of J.W. Christian.  For the past two years Mrs. Christian has been in delicate health.  Mrs. Christian’s maiden name was Mary Mumper, born September 12, 1867, in Marion county this state.  She gave her hand in marriage to Mr. Christian December 24, 1888.  She was widely known though out Eugene, and her many friends will mourn her early demise, and extend their heartfelt sympathy for the father and three bright little children, who so much need the loving care of a loving mother.” Eugene Morning Register, Jan 14, 1896. University of Oregon Knight Library, Newspaper Collection.

The 1880 U.S. Census taken in La Bish, Marion Co, Oregon lists Mary as the 13-year-old daughter of Michael L. Mumper a farmer who was born in Pennsylvania.

Her husband John W. Christian was born in Idaho,  1910 Census has their family living is the “Chesher” [aka Cheshire], Lane County, Oregon.  Their children are listed as Eugene L. Christian 20yr, Zula M. Christian 19yr and Roy Christian 16yr.  The youngest Roy being just a toddler when his mother passed away in 1896.  The 1900 Census lists Etha Christian, John’s sister living with them and the 1910 Census lists another sister Susan Maxwell in the same household, I assume to help out with the household duties.

Many members of John W. Christian’s family are buried at the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery [I.O.O.F].  John Wesley Christian born 7 Aug 1852  in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and died 11 Feb 1925 in Goshen, Lane Co., Oregon.  His wife Mary E.
