Monroe S. Hubble Passes to Great Beyond Sep. 16, 1908

“Well-known Drayman expires after eight months of suffering – Funeral Friday.

M.S Hubble the well-known Eugene drayman, after an eight months illness from tuberculosis of the spine, died at his home on Olive street between West Fifth and West Sixth this morning at one o’clock.  The funeral will be held at the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the services will be conducted  by Rev. O. C. Wright, pastor of the Baptist church.  The Eagles will have charge of the services at the grave in the I.O.O.F. cemetery[*].

Monroe Smith Hubble was born at Stanford, Lincoln county, Kentucky, Dec. 30, 1858.  He was united in marriage on his 21st birthday, Dec. 30, 1878 to Moss Emma Moss, of Winchester, Ill.  From this union five children were born.  They moved to Eugene in the year 1888 and they had been here only nine months when Mrs. Hubble and two sons were drowned in the Willamette river near this city.  This occurred on June 30, 1889.  On June 24, 1893 Mr. Hubble was united in marriage to Miss Minnie Farrow of Eugene who still survives him with his daughters, Mrs. Arthur Merrill of Speer, Ill., Miss Cecil Hubble and Mrs. James Grant of Portland.

Deceased was a man of genial disposition and had hosts of friends.  He was in the transfer business her for several years until he was taken sick sights months ago and from that time he was never able to work.  He underwent three surgical operations during his illness and spent several months in St.Vincent’s hospital at Portland, being brought home only a short time ago.  He was a member of the Eugene Aerie No. 2765, fraternal Order of Eagles, and of the Sons of Veterans.”  Eugene Daily Guard, Sep. 16, 1908, pg. 4, col. 4. *Obituary mistakenly states he would be buried at the IOOF (Pioneer Cemetery) – he was actually buried next to his wife and sons at the Masonic Cemetery – just southwest of the IOOF Cemetery.  The north face of the stone reads, Monroe S. Hubble born Dec. 30. 1858 died Sep. 16, 1908.  The east face reads,  Emma A. Hubble born Aug 25, 1856 died June 30, 1889 – died by drowning.  The south face reads Lee Roy born Sept 27, 1886 died June 30, 1889.  Harrison born July 17, 1888 died June 30, 1889 sons of M.S. & Emma A. Hubble – died by drowning.

Mrs. Emma Hubble’s obituary was posted on April 25th.
