Wife of H.G. Owen
Born May 9, 1840
Died July 3, 1874
This stone has stood for 137 years before I stumbled on it. I was anxious to see what the newspapers may have written about her death. Eugene newspapers at the University of Oregon Knight Library go clear back to the 1860s for Eugene. Below is what I found for her death. Sadly we can confirm only two things, she was the wife of H.C. Owen and died! There were not a lot of early obituaries printed, most were just notices of the death.
“The wife of H.C. Owen died at her residence in this city yesterday morning. The funeral will take place this afternoon.” Oregon State Journal (Eugene), July 4, 1874, pg. 3, col. 1. A small discrepancy in Mr. Owen’s name. The stone reads H.G and the newspaper reads H.C., in cases such as this I tend to go with “what is cut in stone“!
The likelihood that an early death did not have an obituaries doesn’t mean I wouldn’t search for a notice. I have found that many early newspaper articles were more about the “event of the death” and not about the person themselves. I like going for long shots in researching my family tree, they can prove the most rewarding.
